Industry sees 159% growth in treatment bookings
Data released by software brand Vagaro shows that bookings for beauty and hair appointments increased by 159% overall year-on-year, despite the rising cost of living and salons increasing their prices.
In a recent survey of UK hair and beauty professionals, 85% of respondents said they raised their prices due to inflation; 49% said their wholesale costs had increased by more than 10%, while 45% said wholesale costs increased by 5-10%. Only 4% said their wholesale costs increased by less than 5%.
Lisa Franklin, skin expert and Vagaro Brand Partner, says:
“People often seek comfort and relaxation. Beauty services offer a way for individuals to pamper themselves and engage in self-care, providing a sense of well-being and stress relief, contributing to a person's self-esteem and self-image, which may be particularly important during challenging times. Looking good and feeling confident can have a positive impact on mental health.”
Haircuts, colour and highlights were the most popular services over the past year accounting for 55% of annual industry revenue, while nail services generated 16.4%, followed by product sales at 14.9% - displaying the importance of retail within a salon environment.
To address the increase in outgoings, salons have strategically reduced their expenses with 28% cutting back on products and inventory and 13% dropping their hours of operation. Social media, text messages and email marketing of special deals and discounts have helped to keep clients engaged and active.
