Views sought on Afro hair discrimination in schools

A new national scoping exercise on Afro hair discrimination in schools across England, Scotland and Wales has been launched by Enact Equality.

The exercise includes surveying people's experiences of hair discrimination in schools, and the results will be used to produce a set of robust guidelines that can be used in schools to help to put an end to hair discrimination.

L'myah Sherae, director of Enact Equality, says:

“I'm thankful to all of the brands and organisations who are supporting our campaign, and I am glad to have the opportunity to help both the Equality and Human Rights Commission, and the UK Government, draft this guidance. Ensuring that schools are safe and supportive environments for Black children must be the core priority here. We want to ensure that no child is ever sent home from school for wearing their hair naturally, or in a protective style, again.”

The campaign is supported by a number of leading brands including Rhyme & Reason, Pantene, Dove and Glamour Magazine.

The survey can be completed online until 16th August 2022.
