Sustainable salon expert launches consultancy service
Freelance hair stylist and former salon owner Karine Jackson has launched a new consultancy service to assist beauty and hair businesses to become more sustainable and meet the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals to reduce climate change.
Karine closed her Covent Garden salon, Karine Jackson Sustainable Hair, after 20 years to enable her to focus on this new venture. Hers was one of the first UK salons to use organic, ammonia free colour to meet the needs of a client with cancer and worked with colour management system Vish to reduce wastage.
The business became the first London salon to go single use plastic free, with Karine buying her team reusable coffee cups and water bottles and banning single use containers in the salon.
She also works closely with Green Salon Collective and through her role as Sustainability Curator at this year's Colour World, reduced waste by 50%.
Commenting on the launch of her new service, Karine Jackson says:
“My learnings over the past 20 years have made me more determined to help our industry, which is a huge consumer of energy and producer of waste, to reduce our environmental impact. When I first did a plastic audit at my salon I was astonished by how much extra waste accumulated…I can quickly see where businesses need to implement new policies and make changes to become substantially more sustainable and I'm looking forward to working with salons, brands, events and more for this new project.”
