Expert insight: Meta human technology enhances Dermalogica’s pro training

BeautyandHairdressing met with Candice Gardner, Education Manager for Learning and Content, Dermalogica UK and Ireland, for an exclusive insight into yet another innovation for the brand.

Candice GardnerPro skincare brand Dermalogica recently introduced their first meta human, Natalia, developed to assist skin specialists in their education.

Can you introduce us to Natalia and how she was developed?
Candice Gardner (CG): So Natalia is our meta human technology that enables us to create skin visualisations. It's based on gaming technology but utilises the idea that skin changes over time and can be influenced by things in the environment but sometimes it's not very easy when you're learning about those changes to visualise it. Meta human technology allows us to see that change and understand exactly what that looks like on the skin.

How is she used in training?
CG: We tend to use Natalia in video animations, where we try to use her as part of a complete story. Sometimes when we're describing complex processes that happen in the skin, it's important to be able to visualise that on the skin surface and what that means from a surface point of view. So we tend to use Natalia in combination with other types of science animation and also product discussion so that we can really demonstrate how a product or a treatment might have an impact in changing someone's skin appearance.

How do you see Dermalogica's use of meta human technology developing in the future?
CG: I think technology is advancing so rapidly all of the time that even from the point of view of Natalia and the technologies we're using now, I can see us being able to integrate other technologies with what we're doing in our meta human space. That will only facilitate further learning about how skin changes, why it changes and what we can do about it.

Natalia really is a learning tool for us, and I anticipate that we are going to continue to explore ways that we can push the boundaries on how we learn and how we understand skin.

What has the feedback been so far?
CG: Everyone loves her! Because it's a very immediate form of learning. I think often with still photography it's quite hard to see the representation of change so with Natalia, because you're seeing that change happening literally in seconds, it's a very insightful visual for somebody and it really helps them to understand what changes we may see or may be expecting to see, and from a learning perspective that's really useful in understanding how a product works or why you might need to take a specific skin care approach.
