Katie Godfrey: Sales that don’t feel like selling
Why retail could be the missing link in your salon.
Retail is one of those words that instantly creates resistance in our industry; not because it doesn't work, but because of how it feels. You got into this industry to help people feel confident, to transform how they look, how they carry themselves, how they see themselves, not to “sell products”.
So somewhere along the way, retail became this uncomfortable add-on. Something awkward, something pushy. Something that didn't quite align with the level of care you actually provide. But most people miss the fact that retail isn't separate from the experience you offer. It is the experience and when it's done properly, it doesn't feel like selling at all.
When a client walks into your salon or clinic, they're not just paying for the hour they spend with you, they're investing in a result. That might be clearer skin, healthier hair, longer-lasting lashes or maybe confidence when they leave the house.
And that result doesn't stop when they walk out your door. This is where retail becomes essential because without the right aftercare, the results you have created start to fade.
Or worse, they undo them completely by using the wrong products at home. So, when retail is missing, there's a gap; a gap between what you could deliver… and what they actually experience. And in that gap, clients start looking elsewhere for answers.
The real reason so many avoid retail
It's rarely about the products and it is always about mindset. There's a belief that recommending products might damage the relationship you have built. That it could come across as pushy, forced or that you feel like a sales person and no one wants that.
There's also the fear around:
•
Investing in stock that might not sell
•
Team members not feeling confident recommending products
•
Not knowing how to naturally bring it into the conversation
There's a misconception that you need a full retail wall, endless stock or a perfectly trained team to make this work, but you don't. Start by choosing a small number of products that genuinely support your services; understand how they help your clients and build this into your natural consultation process.
You will see when you start doing this your confidence builds and your team becomes more comfortable. Clients start seeing better results and come back because of it. Not just for the treatment but to top up their products when they run out.
When retail becomes part of your business in the right way, it shifts everything. Your income grows. Did you know you could make 40% more just by retailing? Your clients stay longer, because they're getting better results and coming to you for more things.
Your team feels more confident because they're delivering full solutions, not just treatments. And your business starts to feel less pressure and more stable because you're no longer relying on being fully booked every hour of every day to make money.
Retail has never been the problem. The way we have been taught to think about it is. When you remove the pressure, the scripts, and the idea that you need to “push” anything… what's left is something much simpler. You're an expert. Your clients are looking for answers rather than trying to find a product down the boots isle.
If retail has been something you've avoided, this is your permission to look at it differently. If it's done right, it grows your business without you doing anything extra.
