UK sun care market surges as SPF becomes daily skincare essential

New data from Circana reveals strong growth in the UK sun care market, as consumers increasingly prioritise SPF and skin protection as part of everyday routines.
Total retail sales across UK outlets, including chemists and health and beauty retailers, reached £444.9 million in the 52 weeks to 25th April 2026, marking a 10% year-on-year increase and a 17% rise compared with two years earlier.
The growth aligns with rising sunshine hours, up 11% year-on-year and 13% above the long-term average, alongside heightened public health awareness around UV exposure. This comes as the UK recorded its hottest May day on record, exceeding 35°C, and follows the recent report from the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Beauty, Hair and Wellbeing calling for a national UV safety strategy.
Prestige sun care continues to outperform, with sales rising 31.4% year-on-year in the 12 months to December 2025, while unit sales grew 37.4%. Demand is particularly strong for face SPF, reflecting a shift towards daily use rather than seasonal purchase. Notably, prestige SPF sales increased by more than 40% year-on-year between September and December 2025.
Growth is being driven by demand rather than price, with the average selling price falling by 4.4% to £18.70. Consumers are seeking accessible, effective solutions that combine skincare benefits with sun protection.
SPF 50 products are leading the category, accounting for 80% of prestige face SPF sales in 2025, while skincare-led formats such as serums and milks are seeing rapid growth. Chemical formulas are also regaining momentum due to their lighter, more wearable textures.
Emma Fishwick, UK Account Director at Circana, said SPF is now firmly embedded in daily skincare routines, highlighting continued opportunities for both premium and accessible brands.
