Trainers in England reminded of treatment restrictions

Beauty and make-up training providers in England are being reminded about restrictions on treatments that they are allowed to carry out face-to-face during training courses, following the UK government's announcement that beauty businesses, including training providers, may now reopen.

The UK government's document, ‘Keeping workers and clients safe during COVID-19 in close contact services', revised on 9th July, outlines guidance for those performing close contact services as well those studying hair and beauty in vocational training environments. Treatments that may not be carried out in training environments include:

  • Face waxing, sugaring or threading services
  • Facial treatments
  • Advanced facial technical (electrical or mechanical)
  • Eyelash treatments
  • Make-up application
  • Dermarolling
  • Dermaplaning
  • Microblading
  • Electrolysis on the face
  • Eyebrow treatments
  • Intricate detailing, outlining or shaving of beards
  • Advanced beauty therapy and aesthetic treatments
The above list is also applicable to salons, spas and mobile therapists.

The restrictions do not currently apply to training providers located in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. However, it is advised that you continue to check devolved government websites for the latest information.

Training in these treatments can be carried out virtually if appropriate, for example via Zoom, and training providers can gain accreditation to carry out these courses virtually by contacting ABT's Accreditation Team at accreditation@abtinsurance.co.uk.
