Expert Advice: 2021 hair trend predictions
Salon owner, Cutting expert and Influencer Callum Standen-May shares his 2021 haircut trend predictions.
For 2021 it's all about more relaxed in texture haircuts and styles, nothing to ‘done'. With that in mind, my top three haircut predictions for the year are:
The natural look French bob
The French bob is such a chic hairstyle at the minute and with this look it's key that the bob is cut bluntly and significantly shorter than the average chin length bob and instead, hitting around the cheekbone area or just under.
This look really enhances the facial features and gives structure to the face, particularly when worn super sleek.
For finishing off this look, I love using the R+Co Tinsel Smoothing Oil which can be used before using heated styling tools to prevent damage and gives the hair a beautiful shine whilst getting rid of frizz and flyaways.
However, this haircut also looks incredible worn messier with the help of a salt spray or texture spray being scrunched into damp hair or tousled with heated styling irons to create soft, relaxed waves to give an effortless, trendy finish.
The mid length shag with a soft textured fringe
Mid-lengths are incredibly popular at the moment and the shag is one of my favourite mid-length styles, incorporating layers and texture into the cut to add texture and movement. What's great about this look is how low-maintenance it is and that it requires little to no styling to look cool and on trend.
A matte styling product, mousse or texturising spray can be applied into the layers to give further volume and body to the hair. I particularly love the using the R+Co Mannequin Styling Paste to style this look, which provides a messy, tousled and matte finish.
This hairstyle works with most hair types, particular those with thinner hair who want their hair to appear thicker. A textured fringe can also be added to this style to add softness to the face and to accentuate the eyes and to help make facial features pop.
The mullet with lots of natural texture
The mullet hairstyle has recently came back in fashion and is one of my favourite looks this year. Seen on celebrities like Miley Cyrus, this is perfect for clients who want a hair look that's a bit more grungy and edgy.
The key is to have the style longer in length at the back with lots of texture throughout and on top.
Hair should be blow-dried using your fingers to provide more movement and texture in the hair to enhance the cut and then a wax can be applied to give further definition. One of my favourites is the R+Co Sand Castle Dry Texture Crème, as it gives the hair texture, body and volume and also includes some beautiful ingredients that work to hydrate the hair, soften, smooth and control frizz.
We're also seeing this hairstyle being worn sleeker recently and with flicked ends, however, the more natural looking mullet is definitely one I think will be around for a long time.
